Pre-Calculus

2^{nd} Semester

Phone: 835-3858

**Course Description: **Pre-Calculus provides students an honors-level study of trigonometry, analytic geometry and data analysis in preparation for calculus. Appropriate technology will be used regularly for instruction and assessment. Topics for this course include linear relations and functions, the nature of graphs, polynomial and rational functions, trigonometric identities and equations, vectors and parametric equations, polar coordinates and complex numbers, conics, exponential and logarithmic functions, and sequences and series.

**Goals/Objectives**: Upon completion of this course students should be able to reason and communicate using mathematics, and work confidently, collaboratively, and independently to solve problems using various problem solving techniques and higher order thinking skills.

**Daily Course Requirements**:

Text: __Advanced Mathematical Concepts__, Glencoe

Scientific calculator for home use

TI-84 Calculator (will be provided for classroom use)

Notebook w/ Loose-leaf paper

Pencils

**Classroom Guidelines**:

Students are expected to be in their assigned seats when the tardy bell finishes ringing. By the time attendance is checked, all notebooks should be opened to the homework assignment for that day.

· It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for make-up work, test, etc. after being absent. Students who miss class because of field trips, school functions, athletics, etc. are responsible for class notes, homework, and due dates.

· In order to be successful in this course you need to attend class regularly, take daily class notes, study new material soon after it is covered in class, and work diligently on homework assignments.

· Students are expected to actively participate during each class by answering and asking questions and by being an active part of cooperative groups.

· Students will not be released to go to the phone, restroom, water fountain, office, guidance dept., etc. unless it’s an emergency

· **Tutoring** will be held on Wednesday afternoons from

**Evaluation Methods**:

Major Tests (weighted twice)

Cumulative Test (weighted once)

Mid-chapter Tests (weighted once)

Homework Average (weighted once)

Daily Average (daily quizzes, group work, writing assignments, etc.) (weighted once)

All students enrolled in this class are required to take the Pre-Calculus teacher-made final examination. This exam will count 25% of the final course grade.

**Grading Scale**:

93-100 A

85-92 B

77-84 C

70-76 D

0-69 F

**PARENTS**: Please indicate below whether you prefer to be contacted at home or at work about your child’s progress.
